How to Treat a Pulled Hamstring

Pulling your hamstring is a result of tearing one or more of the three hamstrings muscles: the semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris. If you’ve pulled any of these muscles, you’ll experience sharp and sudden pain at the back of your leg while you exercise. How to Treat a Pulled Hamstring

  1. Treat the injury immediately. The longer that you wait, the longer it will take to heal.
  2. Elevate your legs above your heart to promote blood circulation in your legs.
  3. Ice your injury for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. You should do this several times for the first 24 to 48 hours.
  4. Stay off your feet and avoid stressing your leg to help with your recovery.
  5. Keep moving throughout your day. Don’t confine yourself to bed – move as much as possible to keep your muscles active. If there’s pain when you walk, use a crutch or have someone help you move around.
  6. Keep up with these steps for up to 72 hours. You should consider a lightweight compression bandage if you haven’t recovered after the first 12 to 24 hours. If there hasn’t been any pain relief after the first three days, you should consider seeing a podiatrist.
