What is Metatarsalgia?

What is metatarsalgia?

Pain in the ball of the foot or inflammation in the area could be symptoms of a condition called metatarsalgia. Physically active individuals that often partake in activities that cause them to run and jump are the most susceptible to developing metatarsalgia. Wearing shoes that do not fit can also result in the development of metatarsalgia.

Metatarsalgia is not an extremely serious condition, but it will cause a person to have to sit out for a period of time from their usual physical activities. There are some home treatments that can be done to relieve the pain caused by metatarsalgia. Resting and the application of ice to the ball of the foot will be helpful in relieving the symptoms caused by metatarsalgia. Wearing the appropriate footwear could be beneficial, as well. Insoles and arch supporters can be worn to absorb shock and will minimize the typical causes of metatarsalgia.

Metatarsalgia can cause sharp pains in the ball of the foot. The pain can spread to the middle toes, such as the second toe, the third toe, and the fourth toe. The pain may shoot to the toes at times, usually when standing. The toes may also go numb or may tingle at times due to metatarsalgia. Flexing the foot with metatarsalgia will cause discomfort or pain. When someone has metatarsalgia they should avoid walking around barefoot when walking on hard surfaces. These symptoms will usually develop over a period of time.

Treating metatarsalgia does not always require seeing a doctor or podiatrist. Adequate rest and icing of the area will help to relieve metatarsalgia symptoms and can, of course, be done at home. Changing to better fitting shoes will help to reverse the effects of metatarsalgia, as well. Ill-fitting shoes are oftentimes the cause in the development of metatarsalgia. Metatarsalgia is not a very serious condition and can be treated quite easily.
