If you have ever awakened in the middle of the night with excruciating pain in your calf muscle, then you were most likely experiencing a charley horse. These are also known as just a cramp in your leg, which happens when your calf muscle locks up. Knowing how to deal with this problem and prevent it will help you get through your day and sleep through the night pain-free.
How to Fix a Charley Horse
- As soon as you get the charley horse, stretch your calf muscle to get rid of the muscle lock. You should push the cramped leg out behind you so that your foot is flat on the floor and your leg is straight.
- Bend your other leg until you feel a stretch in your calf. Hold this for 10 to 15 seconds, and then rest. Repeat this stretch two to three times to really stretch out your calf.
- Massage your calf by rubbing your thumbs and fingers over the area that’s in pain while your muscle is relaxed. Switch it up by using your fingers for pinpoint massage and the ball of your hand for complete massage relief.
