A nail fungus is a pretty unpleasant thing to experience. You could have toenail discoloration, a bad odor, discharge, or your nail may even fall off. However, you can treat the problem and work towards future foot health with an at-home remedy. Here are just a few suggestions to get you started. How to Treat Toenail Fungus
- For toenails that have advanced fungus underneath that is growing and lifting the nail up off its bed, soak the foot for 20-30 minutes in warm water. Then, begin trimming away all of the unattached nail and scrape off the fungus matter. Then, push the cuticles back. Trimming after bathing is often the best time because your nails are at their softest. If there is any pain, stop and go see a podiatrist.
- Allow air to reach the infected toe as much as possible, meaning it’s best to go barefoot when you can. Avoid wearing tight shoes – they push your toes together, which could potentially lead to the transfer of the fungus to other toes.
- Keep Vick’s Vapor Rub salve by your bedside and put a little bit on your affected toe before putting on socks. This method takes a little while, so you have to be patient, but treatment worth the wait.
- Soak your toes in a weak solution of water and vinegar for half an hour every night. This will lower the pH of your toenails so that the fungus dies away. You should do this every night for three to six months. It’s quite a commitment, but it works.
