Nail & Skin Care

Neuropathy Pain – You don’t have to live with it anymore. If you’re experiencing numbness and tightness to the legs and feet there is help!

Ingrown toenails are caused when a hard toenail grows into soft skin, most often at the sides of the nail.

The most common causes of ingrown toenails are tight shoes, improper cutting of toenails, trauma to the toenail, pregnancy, and the natural shape of the toenail.

If an ingrown nail causes a break in the skin, bacteria may enter and cause an infection. Signs of infection include drainage, a foul odor, pain, welling, and redness.

We know this hurts badly, and can worsen quickly. Dr Goldbaum can cure this with a pain-free laser treatment that prevents the spread of infection and the return growth of the ingrown nail.

Laser treatments are also used for skin tags. Skin tags are very common and look like small pieces of hanging skin.

Fibula Nail Surgery: Benefits and Overview

Fibula nail surgery, also known as intramedullary nailing of the fibula, is a modern surgical technique used to treat fractures of the fibula—particularly in the distal portion near the ankle. It serves as an alternative to traditional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using plates and screws.

Key Benefits of Fibula Nail Surgery

Minimally Invasive Technique: Uses smaller incisions with less soft tissue damage. Ideal for elderly or diabetic patients.

Lower Risk of Wound Complications: Reduced chance of infection and skin breakdown compared to plating techniques.

Faster Recovery: Less postoperative pain and quicker return to mobility. May allow earlier weightbearing.

Lower Profile Implant: Implants are less prominent under the skin, decreasing irritation and the need for removal.

Effective Fixation: Modern fibula nails provide good stability for suitable fractures, including comminuted types.

Good Cosmetic Results: Smaller incisions mean less scarring, ideal for patients concerned with appearance.

Common Indications

This procedure is often selected for patients with:

·        Isolated distal fibula fractures

·        Bimalleolar or trimalleolar ankle fractures (combined with other fixation)

·        Patients with compromised soft tissue (e.g., diabetics, elderly)

·        Fragile skin conditions or previous wound healing problems

Important Considerations

·        Not appropriate for all fibula fracture types (e.g., proximal or complex fractures)

·        Requires surgeon experience with technique and use of imaging

·        Precision is critical for implant success and bone healing

Key Information

  • Changes in the nails or skin of the feet can be signs of infection, injury, or other medical conditions.
  • Patients with diabetes or poor circulation, need acareful approach to diagnosis.
  • Problems can worsen quickly with certain medical conditions
  • Symptoms

Fungal infections, warts, or thick painful or ingrown toenails need evaluation for treatment recommendations.

  • TreatmentExamining Nails and Skin

Wounds, fungus/bacterial/blisters, corns and callouses, or any break in the skin all need evaluation especially in diabetic/patients with poor sensation.

  • Why It Matters

Nail and skin problems may seem minor but can lead to serious complications if ignored—especially in people with diabetes, neuropathy, or circulation issues.
