What Exactly is a Bunion?

It’s a scary word, isn’t it? In reality, though, it’s not so scary! A bunion by definition is located at the big toe’s base and is a noticeable enlargement of the toe’s joint comprised of soft tissue and bone. Bunions ultimately happen because your big toe presses against your second toe and forces the joint on the side of your toe to stick out. It’s not a wound or sore, just an enlargement! The causes of a bunion can be:

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes (shoes that are too narrow, too tight, too high)
  • Injuries
  • Inherited foot-type
  • Congenital deformities (from birth)
  • Certain types of arthritis
  • Extra stress on the feet

The symptoms of a bunion are most commonly a lump/bump on the side of your big toe. The lump will feel hard and possibly sore from the rubbing. The bunion may cause you to have more difficulty in moving your big toe and can become painful.

A bunion can be left alone, without seeking the help of your Podiatrist. However, if your bunion is consistently uncomfortable, you should seek treatment. Your Podiatrist can also help direct you in buying the right shoes for your feet to prevent problems like this.

Bunions can be treated surgically or non-surgically, depending on the severity as diagnosed by your Podiatrist. Some non-surgical treatments includes wearing proper shoes, adding inserts into your shoes, splinting, and applying ice. These decisions are best made in conjunction with your doctor.
