How to Minimize Spider Veins

Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are red or blue colored veins that are puffy near the top of the skin. They can be embarrassing and unattractive, but even though many cases of spider veins can’t be prevented, here are a few tips to help you minimize the amount of spider veins that pop up.

How to Minimize Spider Veins

1. Changes in Your Diet

  • Try to stick with foods that are high in fiber like fruits, vegetable and whole grain to reduce constipation. By straining to move the bowels you’re putting pressure on the veins, which leads to the bluish veins you see on your skin.
  • Eat a low-sodium diet to keep your body from swelling due to salt.
  • Eat more ginger, garlic and onion to help break down the protein fibrin around the veins. Fibrin acts as a barrier around wounds and helps with blood clotting, but in the process it gets stuck around the veins making them look lumpy.

2. Modify Your Lifestyle

  • Avoid, if you can, sitting or standing in the same position for an extended period of time. By doing this you are putting pressure on the valves in your veins. Also, try keeping your feet elevated as you sleep or watch television.
  • Opt for cooler showers instead of hot ones so that the blood vessels don’t dilate and become more noticeable. You should also try and stay out of the sun as often as you can and remember to always wear sunscreen.
  • To keep up circulation and promote tone muscles and firm skin, exercise at least half an hour every day.
  • If you already have spider veins, you can temporarily cover them up with a little concealer and foundation cream.

If you already have spider veins and are looking for more permanent ways to improve the look of them, ask you doctor to suggest clinical methods that could help.
