The Proper Technique for Lacing Your Shoes

There’s a lot of variable that go into how well your feet perform for you over a life time. So it’s easy to overlook the day-to-day things… like lacing your shoes. Well, the odds are that apart from being told that the bunny goes around the tree before it goes into the hole, you may not have ever had a detailed instruction on the subject. So… without further ado, we give you…

The Proper Technique for Lacing Your Shoes

A great way to avoid any painful injuries and get rid of foot problems is to simply adjust how you you’re your shoes. Just follow these tips to make sure your shoes are fitting your foot just the way it should.

  1. Loosen the laces as you slip into the shoes. This prevents unnecessary stress on the eyelets (small holes for the lace) and the backs of the shoes.
  2. Start lacing your shoes at the eyelets closest to your toes, and pull the laces of one set of eyelets at a time to tighten them up.
  3. Remember, the more eyelets on your shoes, the easier it will be to lace them up properly.
  4. The crisscross method works best for most people.
Here are some techniques to go by, depending on your needs:
  • Narrow Feet: If you have narrow feet, use the eyelets farthest from the tongue of the shoes to bring up the side of the shoe.
  • Wide Feet: For wider feet use the eyelets closest to the tongue of the shoe. This will give your foot more breathing room.
  • Heel Problems: For those of you with heel problems you want to use every eyelet to make sure the heel is tied tightly. When you get to the last eyelet on each side, thread the lace through the top eyelet, making a small loop. Then, thread the other lace through each loop before tying it.
  • Narrow Heel and Wide Forefoot: Use two laces if you have a narrow heel and a wide forefoot. Just thread through the top half of the eyelets and the other lace through the bottom half of the eyelets. The lace closest to the heel should be tied  a bit tighter than the lace closest to your toes.

Professional treatment to relieve the pain is available from doctors such as Delray Beach’s Dr. Ian Goldbaum of Delray Beach Podiatry, who has provided us with this blog. If the pain continues, a podiatrist with Dr. Goldbaum’s experience should be consulted. You must get proper treatment to prevent permanent damage.
