Painful Feet Do Not Have to Haunt Women – Podiatry Talk

When a woman feels her heartbeat in her feet, it’s time for a change. Many women experience more foot pain in the fall, when they switch from sandals to closed shoes and sometimes high heels. This is especially true for women who choose shoes with narrow toe boxes. Fashion concerns notwithstanding, a narrow toe box can spell agony, particularly when a woman has painful bunions or other foot problems.

Making the switch to closed-toe shoes does not have to be painful. The first rule for greater comfort is to look for shoes with more room in the toe area. Shoes with flat soles are also much less likely to cause discomfort than stiletto heels.

Special orthotic inserts, gel insoles and other devices available from the podiatrist can greatly reduce discomfort. Only if these measures fail should a patient consider foot surgery. Bunion surgery is generally very successful, but the post-surgical pain and inconvenience are significant. The best treatment is, of course, prevention.

Women can reduce their chances of developing bunions by always wearing quality shoes that fit well and have plenty of room for the front of the foot. If possible, women should opt for flats instead of high heels.

With all of the good choices in foot wear, why would any woman opt for shoes that will cause her feet to hurt?
