How to Prepare for the Big Run

The weather is finally starting to cool down so it’s time to pull out your running shoes from the back of your closet and get ready for 5ks, 10ks and marathons! But wait, don’t go lacing up your shoes just yet, there are a few things you need to do before your big races to avoid any potential pain and injuries.

How to Prepare for the Big Run

  1. Stretching: This is key for any kind of exercise. You want to make sure your muscles are nice and flexible so you don’t get injured.
  2. Don’t push it: If you’ve been injured before, you need to make sure you get evaluated to make sure you are completely healed. Otherwise, you could end up with serious long -term damage if you run with an injury.
  3. Buy good running shoes: This makes the difference between a good runner and an excellent runner. The wrong shoes can really mess up your feet and ankles and cause serious pain.  If you have flat feet, high arches, arthritis or tendinitis you may want to consider custom orthotics.
  4. Choose a good running surface: Concrete and asphalt don’t have the shock absorption that dirt trails and tracks have.  Harder surfaces can be rough on your extremities, ultimately causing your legs, ankles and feel in a lot of pain.
