If you’ve been diagnosed with degenerative spine disease, bulging/herniated discs, or spinal stenosis, you may also be experiencing some foot pain. Sure, the burning or tingling pain in your feet could be due to neuromas or diabetic neuropathy, but you should consider the possibility that your back pain could also be the source of the problem.
How Can Your Back Pain Affect Your Feet?
The lower back holds the nerves that go to your legs and feet. So, if you suffer from lower back arthritis, sciatica or spinal stenosis, these conditions can cause nerve impingements in the spine which lead to radiating, burning, tingling pain to either one or both of your feet.
When patients are showing these symptoms, it’s important to rule out other possible factors such as poor circulation or neuropathy from other systemic diseases. The best way to figure out what is going on is to have your podiatrist do some tests to find the source.
If your doctor determines after the exam that the condition is caused by a nerve or low back problem, they will then order a nerve test that can help determine which specific nerve is involved and at what level of the leg or back the nerve pain is coming from. They may also consider consulting a neurologist if they feel it’s necessary after the nerve test.
