Obviously, stilettos aren’t your everyday shoe – they are for parties or more formal events. If you’re somewhat of an amateur when it comes to walking in these sexy shoes, fear not! If you are determined enough to learn to walk gracefully in them, it will happen; all you need to do is follow a few steps that will leave you strutting in no time!
- Buy the shoes – Stay away from cheap stilettos, they break easily, are incredibly uncomfortable, and just don’t look as great. Make sure the ones you choose fit comfortably and are the right size. It’s hard to walk pretty when you’re in pain!
- Stand in your stilettos – Yep, just stand. You need to let your body get used to how it feels to have these high heels on your feet. Only stand for a few minutes at first, and then gradually increase the time you stand in them. Stay away from slippery floors or shag rugs, though. That’s just a recipe for disaster.
- Begin practicing your walk – the higher the heel, the less stable you feel so try with a lower heel at first. Practice only a little bit at a time, giving your feet time to breath between tries. If you really want to go the extra mile, consider stretching before wearing your stilettos to give your legs a chance to limber up. Walk to and from the mirror – heel first, ball second, toes last. Remember to distribute the weight on the ball of your foot and your toes, not your heel. Lead with the foot you’re most comfortable with and take short, careful steps.
- Stand straight – You may feel unbalanced at first, but that’s just because you’re wearing stilettos. If you’re standing straight, your heel is anchoring you so you won’t fall backwards. Plus you look way more confident when you have good posture!
- Switch up surfaces – Once you get comfortable walking where you first started practicing, try it out on different floors – tile, thick carpet, etc. This way you’ll be ready for anything when you step out of your home. Challenge yourself, too. Carry a bag or a cup of coffee while you walk around the house.
- Go outside – get used to the feeling of concrete, gravel, and other outdoor surfaces. This way you’ll learn how to walk in areas like grass, which you will sink into, or just avoid it all together.
Head out in your stilettos and have a good time! You’ve worked your butt off getting ready to look sexy and graceful in those heels, now it’s time to show off what you’ve got and have fun. Keep in mind, too, that if your stilettos really start to hurt, you can always slip a spare pair of shoes in your bag. They may come in handy if you plan on dancing or want to avoid seeing the foot doctor soon!
