Mycotis Nails
Active people, from Olympic athletes to those who are on their feet all day, experience a variety of different foot ailments that range in severity. One of the most common is known as Mycotis nails, in which the toenails are yellowed, thick and brittle and may have become separated from the nail bed. In extreme cases the nail is actually crumbly and will fall apart, exposing the sensitive skin beneath.
Nail Disease
Mycotis nails are caused by a fungus that is found in the atmosphere but thrives on dark, moist environments, much like the perfect one created by a shoe and regular sweating from the feet. Much like other foot-related fungal infections like athlete’s foot, the Mycoctic nail disease can be passed from one host to another by sharing shoes, socks or by rubbing feet with someone else—if you’re into that sort of thing.
If you do contract Mycotis nails, it can be difficult to cure. Don’t remove the nail that has become infected as that will only spread the infection. Have a podiatrist prescribe you antifungal creams, lotions, or gels for the affected area. You may have to regularly apply over many weeks and get rid of your old pairs of shoes. In severe cases, antifungal pills can be taken to wipe out the nail fungus, though there are often side effects that can damage the liver over the months you are taking them.
Even once it is cured, the fungus can return if feet are regularly exposed to moist environments. So it’s better to not get this fungus in the first place.
Getting Professional Treatment
The Podiatrist is a specialist in Mycotis nails and other related nail diseases as well as knee or lower leg problems. The time to see a podiatrist is when you suspect something may be wrong. Waiting can lead to more developed problems.
