What is Platelet Rich Plasma?
Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP as it is more commonly known as, is blood plasma which contains increased concentrations of platelets. These in turn yield high concentrations of growth factors and proteins which will enhance the healing of connective tissue on a cellular level promoting the development of new blood vessels and helping to advance the healing of wounds.
How does this process actually work?
A small amount of blood is taken from the patient and placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins the blood and produces the PRP. This process is quick and simple. The PRP is then injected into the wound or affected area. The area is stimulated by the PRP and becomes inflamed which then causes the healing to begin.
Which injuries can be effectively treated by PRP?
PRP injections can be used to effectively heal many areas including but not limited to a number of Sports Injuries, tendons, ligaments and Plantar Fasciitis.
How many treatments would I need?
Everyone is different but anywhere from 1-3 treatments is average. Of course, some people may require up to 6 treatments depending on the severity of the wound or injury. There is no limit on the number of treatments that a patient may have if more are indicated.
Should I try a more conservative treatment first?
