Your feet have the unenviable task of taking the full weight of your entire body, so it’s important to reward them by following these tips for good foot hygiene.
If left untreated, these problems can in turn cause pain that radiates to other parts of the body, such as the back, hips, and knees.
There is some good news, however. The majority of these problems can be prevented by taking the time to take care of your feet. A little bit of thought and caring now can prevent pain later in life! Follow our tips for good foot hygiene:
Tips for Good Foot Hygiene
Wash your feet daily
Leaving dirt on the surface of the skin is an easy invitation for both irritation and infection. Never go to bed for the night unless you have washed your feet. Take 5 minutes every evening to wash your feet with soap and water. Then make sure they are rinsed well.
Dry well
After your feet have been washed, take care to dry them completely. Pay special attention to the area in between the toes which can be a breeding ground for a host of germs like Athlete’s foot. Once they are dry you can use a foot cream containing a moisturizer.
Slough away hard skin
You should regularly take a few minutes and use a pumice stone to remove any hard calluses or skin. This is much easier on the skin of the feet if it is done while they are damp.
Cut toenails with care
When it is time to trim your toenails they should not be trimmed along the edges or on an angle. This is one of the main causes of ingrown toenails. Always cut the nails straight across.
Change your socks often
Change your socks at least once per day to prevent odor. It is also a good idea to have a spare pair tucked away in the car or briefcase in case your feet get wet (from the gym, rain, etc.). This way you can dry them off and put fresh socks on.
Beware of bugs
When you are going to be using public areas such as hotel bathrooms, gym showers, or other similar places, make sure to avoid picking up verrucas or athlete’s foot by wearing flip-flops.
