The Effects of Flip-Flops on Your Feet

With spring and summer just around the corner, it’s important to know the potentially negative effects of flip-flops on your feet.

When it comes to those ensembles, most people turn to flip-flops as the shoe of choice – especially here in South Florida.

For some people, the symbol of summer has become the ability to wear flip-flops day and night. However, the downside to this preferred choice of footwear is the long-term foot issues that can result from wearing flip-flops all summer long and year after year.

What are the Effects of Flip-Flops on your Feet?

Issues with your feet from continued use of flip-flops ranges from heel and arch pain resulting from the lack of support that is notoriously connected to flip-flops, to inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of the foot. Your podiatrist will tell you to avoid wearing flip-flops for prolonged periods of time. If you can’t see yourself making it through the summer without them, it is important to consider the brands that have arch support at the very least.

Wearing flip-flops also can affect the stride of the wearer. It tends to shorten up the stride and results in the ankles turning inward. Foot fatigue and bunions are also issues that can arise for people that have a devotion to flip-flops during the summer months.

Flip-Flops come in any color imaginable and with various different straps and levels, some with heels and some just flat pieces of plastic to keep your feet from touching the hot blacktop or sand. It is important to remember how much you can be hurting your body by wearing these seemingly innocuous shoes.

Be logical, minimize the time spent wearing flip-flops and avoid them altogether if any parts of your body start hurting that could be related to flip-flops on your feet.
