Heel pain is a common complaint heard by podiatrists and general practitioners. There are many things that can cause this type of pain, including diabetes and other circulatory diseases. Most of the time though, there are simple things that you can do at home to relieve your pain.
- Sometimes heel pain is caused by improperly fitted shoes, overuse or tight muscles in the calf. This type of pain may be relieved by simply resting the foot. Don’t stand or run for a while until the pain is minimal.
- Ice it down. Put ice on the affected area for 10 to 15 minutes for twice a day until the pain goes away. The ice will help to reduce any inflammation in the area.
- Wear shoes that both fit right and are supportive. Look for shoes that offer a good support for your arches. If you happen to notice that your heel hurts more when you are wearing a particular pair of shoes then do the smart thing and don’t wear them anymore. Many people suffer heel pain as a direct result of wearing high heels or shoes that lack proper support for the arches.
- Use orthotics. You can either ask your doctor which ones will be best for you or stand on the machine that some of the bigger pharmacies have that will tell you exactly which ones you need.
- Stretch your legs as often as possible since many times heel pain is caused by tight calf muscles.
If none of these options appears to be working for you then you may want to talk to your doctor about what the causes and other possible treatment options are for you.
