Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) Symptoms & Treatment

For cancer patients, chemotherapy and other drugs used to treat cancer can damage peripheral nerves, which causes neuropathy. When this happens it is called chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).

An estimated 20 million people in the United States suffer from some form of neuropathy, a condition that affects the normal activity of the nerves that connect the central nervous system — the brain and spinal cord — to the rest of the body.

Neuropathy can involve various different nerve types, including motor, sensory, and autonomic nerves. It can also be categorized by the size of the nerve fibers involved, large or small.

At Delray Beach and Boynton Beach Podiatry, Dr. Ian S. Goldbaum serves as head of a state-of-the-art a recently unveiled Neuropathy Treatment Center, utilizing effective treatments and advanced technology to treat patients suffering from this unfortunate condition.

“The treatment of neuropathy is the biggest part of my practice,” Dr. Goldbaum said. “I’ve spent the past 33 years perfecting the care and treatment of neuropathy for the lower extremities. My significant expertise in this area, especially helping diabetics, chemotherapy patients and vascular patients, has resulted in a higher level of patient satisfaction.

“We now have the newest technology and provide full treatment in our facility in order to give our patients the most efficacious and convenient care possible.”

If you are undergoing chemotherapy, be sure to tell your doctor if your treatment is causing signs of chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy. Your team may need to delay your treatment, use smaller doses of the chemo drugs, or stop treatment with the drug that is causing the CIPN until your symptoms get better.

These symptoms include, but are not limited to the following:

– Pain

– Burning

– Tingling (“pins and needles” feeling)

– Loss of feeling

– Trouble using your fingers to pick up or hold things; dropping things

– Balance problems

– Trouble with tripping or stumbling while walking

– Being more sensitive to cold or heat

– Being more sensitive to touch or pressure

– Shrinking muscles

– Muscle weakness

CIPN can cause severe pain and can affect your ability to do things like walk or write. If left untreated, it can cause more serious problems like changes in your heart rate and blood pressure, dangerous falls, trouble breathing, paralysis, or organ failure.

As a Neuropathy Treatment Center, Dr. Goldbaum has the ability to provide patients with the best care possible through numerous advanced treatments and state-of-the-art technology, including Cold Laser Therapy, Circulator Boot Therapy and Micro-Vas Vascular Treatment.

“It’s better to seek treatment when you are already undergoing chemo rather than after,” Dr. Goldbaum said. “That way, we are able to work directly with the oncologist or hematologist to create a complete outlook for recovery. We work hand-in-hand with other doctors in order to make sure patients are getting the best treatment possible.”

In addition to these treatments, Dr. Goldbaum also offers his patients numerous products and services to improve the lifestyle of those living with neuropathy, including Gait-Scan Analysis for fall prevention, Circulation Testing, and pharmaceuticals, such as Neurvasia, to treat daily aches and pains and improve vascular health.

“We’re an all-inclusive center,” Dr. Goldbaum said.

The goal of these treatments is to provide individuals suffering from neuropathy with effective solutions to quickly improve their comfort and quality of life without surgery.
